How I can help

Oilfield Maths

As a graduate of Petroleum Engineering, who had coauthored an SPE paper on drilling fluids, take it from me when I say that oil field calculations could be daunting especially if you have a poor grasp of the basic mathematical concept of mensuration. Strong knowledge of areas and volumes of basic geometric shapes is important, alongside the ability to correctly apply such knowledge in finding solution to a problem.

For instance, when tripping in or out of a well, it is standard practice to monitor fluid levels in the mud pit for changes (+ve, or -ve), and the immersion or pulling out of the tubular (drill pipe, casing or tubing) among other factors (such as kicks or losses due to accidental fracturing) contribute to this change, by displacing its own volume of the fluid. The volume in question is neither the outside nor inner volume (hollow space) of the tubular but the mass volume (volume of the solid) given as (π(D²-d²)Lp) /4. This illustrates that besides knowing formulas, understanding what the problem demands is important.

In addition, if you've known only the metric units all your life, you might want to familiarize yourself with the old imperial units of measurement, because most of the oil field calculation results are reported in inches (in) or foot (ft), pounds (lbf or lbm), gallons (gal), barrels (bbl), horsepower (hp), et cetera., and your computation experience will be fluid if you didn't have to look up the right unit for a parameter from a book each and every time you wanted to report results.

Furthermore, the importance of having a sound knowledge of unit conversion and dimensional analysis cannot be overemphasized.
With the above prerequisites, one can confidently proceed to calculations involving: densities (liquid and solid), API gravity, hydrostatic pressure, drilling fluids and cement slurry design, directional drilling, etc. Enough said.
