Basic Mathematics
I have over 3 years experience in teaching basic mathematics. Some of the topics covered includes; basic number operations, such as subtraction or division, fractions , decimals , place values and ratio among others. The techniques employed involves posing challenging tasks that connect to children’s prior understandings and out-of-school experiences, providing opportunities for children to make sense of and talk about mathematics, and promoting the use of mental mathematics based on patterns in the number system. Also, meaningful tasks are given to pupils to solve and explain problems mentally (without pencils, paper or calculator). This promotes students’ sensemaking, creativity and, most importantly, their sense that they are mathematicians.
