Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society like Nigeria.

I have been teaching pupils, secondary school students and colleges of education students social studies for years. I employ both interactive and lecture methods to inculcate the knowledge of social to my students. The subject is one of my favourite subjects. My students perform well in their internal and external examinations on social studies subject and other related subjects I lecture them on. A trial will certainly convince you.

Having been in British and American systems of education and taught students/pupils using their curriculums, I found out that in primary/elementary school stage, the level of learning using British curriculum is substantially higher. However, it seems to me that the American curriculum picks up.
