Business development is an ever-evolving concept that can be approached from different perspectives. At its basic level, business development is defined as growing a business by making it more competitive, expanding products or services, and/or focusing on specific markets. In other words, business development is the practice of growing a business beyond its current state. It is also the creation of long-term value for an organization from customers, markets, and relationships.
There are three main components that business experts generally agree that it form the base of business development: markets, customers, and relationships. In order to grow a business beyond its current state, it is important to focus on one or more of these areas. The type of business and the direction of growth determine where the focus is placed. In my teaching of business development, I take a practical critical survey of your business, business idea/plan to tell/teach the area of focus. When you don’t know the actual area to focus, your effort in developing your business may lead to de-marketing.
I would like to briefly discuss the three main factors to be considered in developing your business using practical approach.
THE MARKET: Let's use frozen yogurt shop as an example. Placing focus on the current market could help in developing the business. You would need to research things like the latest trends in flavors and nutrition. Are there new popular flavors or toppings? Is there a yogurt you could offer that has fewer calories or sugar but still has good flavor? Is there a demand for specialty events like office yogurt parties that you could add as a catering service? If so, these could be offered as additional products and services. Becoming informed about the current market demands will help you determine how to develop or grow your business.
LONG-TERM VALUE: First, what do I mean by “long-term value?” In its simplest form, “value” is cash, money, the lifeblood of any business (but it can also be access, prestige, or anything else a company seeks in order to grow). And there are plenty of ways to make a quick buck for you or your company. But business development is not about get-rich-quick schemes and I-win-you-lose tactics that create value that’s gone tomorrow as easily as it came today. It’s about creating opportunities for that value to persist over the long-term, to keep the floodgates open so that value can flow indefinitely. Thinking about business development as a means to creating long-term value is the only true way to succeed in consistently growing a business or an organization. For instance, a company like Tuteria is creating a long term value through its integrity, access and prestige that has been it canon for years. Money alone cannot sustain a long term value, if it so, ponzi companies like MMM, Twinkas, etc would have be in existence till date.
CUSTOMERS: “customers” portion of the definition may be slightly more obvious – customers pay the bills. They are the people who pay you for your products and services, and without them you won’t have any business to develop. But not everyone is a natural customer for your business. Maybe your product doesn’t have the features I’m looking for. Maybe your product is perfect, but I don’t even know your company sells it. Or maybe you’re not reaching me because you’re not knocking on my door. Also, creating awareness (advertising) for potential customers to know your products and address is very essential.
I have taught people; giving them ideas and strategies which they employed in developing their business and today, their small-scale and medium-scale businesses are growing and expanding.
I have four years experience in teaching business development. I started teaching business development in 2015 after I got my associate membership, proficiency certificate and later certified as chartered manager by Nigerian Institute of Management. I used practical approaches, feasibility survey (what to produce/sell, where to produce/sell, for whom to produce/sell and the marketability index of the location).
