My main goal when going into the classroom to teach math is for the teaching and learning process to be done with understanding. Also considering the fact that elementary math is a subject many students find difficult to grasp, the teaching of the subject requires extra attention although this may differ with each student.

My strategies are very simple. I focus majorly on building a solid foundation for each concept to be taught by building on what my pupils already know about the topic or part of the topic in question.
Next, I incorporate visuals and graphics into my teaching which may be from the textbook, online videos or real-life samples. From experience, the use of this method has been very effective although with proper guidance from me as the teacher and continuous practice from my pupils.
Over time, I have also observed that some of my pupils are always hesitant to raise their hands when they are not clear about certain steps for fear of sounding unintelligent. Then, I introduced verbalized thinking which is a situation whereby a pupil is required to verbalize the step by step process on how she got her final answer. This method has been superb because awesome results were achieved. Another method I use to teach mathematics is to guide my pupils in the right direction so that they can figure out their own errors when they get particular sums wrong rather than just giving them the correct answers. This will afford them to learn the concept better on their own.

Finally, I always encourage my pupils a lot especially when they get answers wrong but they got the steps right to a certain stage because I know that when encouraged, they will be motivated to keep trying till they get it. For my nursery pupils, I ensure that I develop their number sense and develop their abilities to manipulate numbers.
