I have been teaching verbal reasoning since 2009 and have taught it in all elementary classes (Years 1-6)· Verbal reasoning, in a nutshell, is all about thinking with words.

My aim is always targeted at building my pupils' potential for critical thinking, problem-solving, and ultimately, intelligence. I achieve this by encouraging them to be widely read, thereby, having an extensive vocabulary. This in- turn gives them a big head-start, as they are building and expanding their vocabulary and general knowledge skills in the process. I also guide them on how to carefully read instructions and follow directions exactly.

Our verbal reasoning lessons encompass a solid grasp of synonyms, antonyms, homophones, plurals, spelling skills, math skills, and general knowledge skills. All of which have been helpful to them in the areas of thinking critically about texts, solving word problems, following written instructions to come up with a solution, spotting letter sequences and cracking letter and number-based codes.

In addition to their textbooks, I always make use of worksheets for extension practice. I also encourage the practice of playing word games, quizzes, doing crosswords and word searches, and playing word-based family games like scrabble. These methods have been effective because my pupils always become smarter, reason faster, and give logical responses to critical questions.
