My first moments of interaction with a learner help me situate them in their current level of knowledge of the subject. This then helps me to tailor my teaching to their specific need(s).
For instance, a person's way of pronouncing words or general diction gives away their command of the language. This is essential for both tutor and learner as it helps to maximise lesson periods.
