Growing up with an authoritative uncle who screams me down at the slightest provocation did very little to my self-image. Although I was very bright academically, I knew deep down that something was missing. People around me saw me as a star; always taking the first position in school but I knew that was not the real me.
I could express myself and argue all point but the moment you ask me to lead a thing as simple as prayer in front of people hmmm, you will see the real me.
This became a serious challenge as I grew into adulthood. I could not even give testimony in church, I could not say anything meaningful in a gathering. People see me as smart until I open my mouth in a gathering.
I decided to take the bull by the horn. I employed the help of a friend who put me through. She was a lady I respected so much because of her carriage on stage. She encouraged me continually as we practiced together, I joined a club and we practiced continually. I also made sure I spoke on every gathering not minding if I was making sense or not; it can't get any worse. Today I am not just a public speaker; I am now a teacher of that which I dreaded the most
Public speaking has it's own rules ranging from the ability to think and coin your words in a way that is appealing to the audience to confidence and carriage.
I recommend that every one especially introverts should make public speaking a priority. This is because it is prerequisite for growth both in business and in your career as first impression not only matters but might be the only and lasting impression
