Pupils see math as a major turn off which is not supposed to be so. A major challenge that I have noticed while teaching math is solving word problems. A good comprehension of the English used in such a problem is very key.
For pupils in the lower elementary, there are some fundamental things they must understand so that the learning of math would not be a challenge. For example, the multiplication table, capacity, weight and length tables, etc. Early assimilation of these key elements is vital.
Constant testing or examination of the pupils is key. After every lesson, I always give my pupils exercises to test their assimilation of the topic that has just been taught. If their performance is not encouraging, the lesson would be carried out again using a different method.
Timing is so important. I encourage my pupils to always remember that no matter how good they are, they must always remember that they will be graded by how many correct answers they can give within a specified time. For this reason, we will carry out exercises to improve their working speed.
