As a teacher, I began my professional career as an Early Years tutor at FAMAKS British school in Abuja. As a class teacher, I taught these subjects using tried and tested methods guaranteed to ensure comprehension on all levels.
Literacy, which is the ability to read and write, was taught primarily by guiding pupils to first distinguish between letter names and sounds. I taught them to identify high frequency and tricky words and grilled them on pronunciation . Spelling drills were also used to consolidate their understanding of these fundamental aspects. The natural progression from this was getting them to read words they had learnt in sentences.
Numeracy is the ability understand and work with numbers. I taught my pupil to be able to identify numbers and their names. Count in 2s, 5s, and 10s, skip count as well as be well grounded in the 4 basic skills of Maths: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division.
