As a teacher, I began my professional career as an Early Years/ Grade 1 teacher at a British Curriculum School. I taught Phonics to my class by first guiding pupils to identify between letter names and letter sounds. I taught them to distinguish between vowel and consonant sounds. As a progression, they were drilled in identifying and pronouncing vowel and consonant diagraphs using the Jolly Phonics series ( 1-4) .
I also taught to identify tricky words that do not follow the Phonics sounds , as well as high frequency words. Spelling drills were frequently used to consolidate their learning .
