I ensure that my pupils acquire the four basic language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing-which make up the foundation of language. As a classroom teacher in the past, I taught Comprehension, Grammar, Spelling/Vocabulary and Creative Writing in an effective way.

To achieve reading mastery, I teach my students reading comprehension strategies and ensure that they learn to look up new words in the text to enable a flow in reading and develop mastery in answering comprehension questions. I also teach them to identify implied statements, to infer and to guard against verbosity and verbatim answers when answering comprehension questions.

In teaching grammar, I ensure that my students know and understand basic grammar rules, rudiments of sentence structure , parts of speech and punctuation. I also ensure that they know the figures of speech and can differentiate between literal and figurative speech. I emphasize the use of Standard English rather than "Nigerian English" and I frequently draw their attention to it and get them to correct themselves.

My approach to teaching vocabulary is to get the child to read short pieces of text, identify new words, find their meaning using a physical or digital dictionary and construct sentences with the newly acquired words.I emphasize the frequent use of such words so they are not easily forgotten. I also teach my students root words and how to build vocabulary by adding prefixes and suffixes to the root words. I speak to my students using words that are unknown and I let them guess the meaning of those words based on the context of my speech.

To teach mastery of spelling, I ensure that my students learn and observe spelling rules, sounds and are able to partition words into their syllables. I also incorporate e-learning in my tutoring sessions to enable my students gain mastery of sounds and accurate pronunciation via activity-based, fun learning.

I challenge my students in writing and ensure that they know the main types of writing.

I am an excellent student of Literature-in-English. I have a flair for languages and have taught myself two foreign languages. This achievement has richly exposed me to the technical skills involved in language acquisition. I'm an avid reader of books and a Merriam-Webster digital dictionary addict. I love to learn and look up new words whenever I read or hear them and then I use them in speech or writing. My best games are word games.
