Children learn better with pictorial illustrations. I have handled little children on reading and even elementary pupils with reading deficiencies.

There is step by step approaches to getting a child to learn and perfect the act of reading. Some of these approaches include the use of pictures with words, learning the sound of letters, learning how to pronounce two letters word, three letters words, etc.
Again, the use of flashcards and such books like Queen Primer helps a lot.
