How I can help

English Language

More than 6 years experience

My observation working with children in primary school and junior secondary school is that there are many different ways of teaching the English language, unfortunately, the textbook styles of learning are not one of the most effective ways. The activity-based approach has proven to be the most productive.

One of the best ways for any child to learn the English language is through word games like Scrabble, Pictionary, and crosswords. It is true that these games are difficult for children to play on their own, but it becomes fun when an instructor or a family member oversees the event. For example, working through crosswords together will help improve children's critical thinking skills.

Personally, where the games listed above are not within my reach, I usually fall back to the use of memory games. I will write the names of objects on a sticky pad and let them stick it to things. Later I will ask them to create their own words sticky pad and read the words out loud. This helps to teach the child to read and write while having fun at the same time.

In addition to that, I don't also forget to use positive reinforcement when they get my answers right. Children also learn through songs, so I look for children's songs in English to teach my kids topics like body parts, clothing, personal hygiene, and other easy things they do on a daily basis.

After delivering my lesson according to the traditional textbook styles, the icing on the cake is when I put the activity-based approach I have just talked about to practice to introduce children to the entertaining and fun aspect of English while improving their writing skills. Over the years this has helped the children I have taught to do exceptionally well in both internal and external English exams.

That's why I encourage parents to:
1. read with their children.
2. encourage their children to read widely.
3. read over their written work with them.
4. encourage their wards to write outside of schoolwork by making them write letters to family members.

Kenneth also teaches:
Technical Drawing, Physics, Literacy & Numeracy, General Mathematics, Geography, Biology, Verbal Reasoning, Computer Science, Chemistry, Basic Sciences, Basic Mathematics, Phonics, Quantitative Reasoning, Basic Technology, IELTS

Levels taught: Primary, Jss, Sss, Undergraduate and Adult

Teaching Curriculum: Nigerian, British, American, Montessori

Having taught at the primary level in a Montessori School that combines the British, American and ultimately the Nigerian curriculum in one place in teaching pedagogy, I understand clearly what most parents need from their ward's teachers.
