How I can help

PMI

More than 1 year experience

I have two years and six month tutoring experience in the field of project coordination and Project management, and over three years industrial training experience. Over the years l have develop an acronym about what tutoring in project management entails in theory and practice leaning: 6PM meaning Proper Planning Prevent Poor Performance to Project Management. This principle is very crucial to everything I do relating to a project or any business activity. Actually, what is taught in school is easily said than done when trying to practicalise it in the industry.

Successful execution of any project lies on full participation of the stakeholders who may affect, be affected by or perceive itself to be affected by a decision, actively or outcome of a project.
Stakeholders includes: Project Manager, project team, project sponsor, sellers, performing organization, government agencies, and area-boys or tout etc.
The focus of the project manager is to manage stakeholder requirement. Hence the project manager must ensure that all stakeholders are identified prior to the planning stage. Stakeholders have varying level of responsibility and authority when participating on a project and these can change over the course of projects life cycle.

They may have a positive or negative influence on a project. During my internship programme in TAE ENGINEERING Company in Lagos, I was the site soil technician mobilizing and demobilize the site team, tools and equipment to a proposed building development site. On getting to the site to conduct the subsoil investigation we were surrounded by over twenty area boys demanding for owo-nile of which their leader was demanding for the sum of eighty thousand naira before we can be allowed to work on that site. All effort by the project owner to persuade for our behalf to execute the project proves abortive. We were not allowed to work, and the project was delayed.
At long run we end up paying the sum of seventy thousand naira before we can have assessed to the site.
Actively managing stakeholder’s expectation decreases the risk of project failure due to unresolved stakeholder issues. This scenario also take place in the Niger Delta between the militant and the Federal Government, which has lead to frequent bombing and destruction to oil facilities. Stakeholder satisfaction, enable timely delivery and staying within budget which indicate a project success.
Base on industrial experience, I have been able to carry out projects successfully from inception to completion. Unsuccessful project are linked to internal factors (e.g. missed deadline, insufficient resources) than external factors (e.g. change in environment, change in strategy).I have learned that the three important aspect of project management are: Product, Service and Result.

What make project managers successful are the skills acquired over a long period of training and experience such as: excellent communication skills, problem solving skills, conceptual and negotiating skills, technical skills, motivational skills, interpersonal and leadership skills etc.
I have managed project related to my field of study. As a geophysicist, most of my work is being done in the field and to be successful to meet stakeholders requirement and satisfaction throughout the life cycle of the project require what I called 3D meaning Desire, Discipline and Determination to succeed.

A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. It has a definite beginning and end, driven by objectives, unique, required work or exertion and create a tangible or intangible outcome. Project has funding limit, consumed human and non human resources (i.e people, money and equipment), and multi-functional in nature (i.e it cut across several functional line).
Examples of a project are: developing a new product or service, constructing a building structure or any civil engineering infrastructure or implementing a new a new business process in an organization. Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirement. It can accomplish through processes such as: Initiation process, planning processes, executing processes, controlling processes and closing processes.

Managing and addressing project constraints involves scope, cost and time. Project can be easily broken down into phases. The phases structure allow project to be segmented into logical subset for ease of management, planning execution and control. Regardless of the number of phases comprising a project, all phase have similar characteristics. Scope is the bedrock of project management. It is a process required to ensure that the project work is complete and successful. Scope must be clearly defined and signed off before work begins. Scope requirement are gathered from relevant stakeholders not just the project. No changes to scope are allowed without an approved change requesting and changing the scope of a project affect it integrity.

Project risk management includes the processes that are required to identify risk response and control risk. Risk is an uncertain event or condition that may affect the project positively, directly or indirectly, it may be known or unknown. Risk may be good or bad. Positive risk is termed as opportunity while negative risk is termed as threat. Transfer: transferring the risk gives another party responsibility for it management. It does not eliminate it. The best way for transferring risk is by getting an insurance policy against risk. Known risk is managed by the project manager while unknown risk is managed by the project sponsor.

Effective project management is characterized by the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to achieve project objectives. Managing project successfully involves two key skills:
Interpersonal skills: leadership, team building, motivation, communication, influencing, decision making, political and cultural awareness, negotiation and delegation etc.
Management skills: presentation skills, negotiation skills, writing skills, soft skills and public speaking.

Lastly, team work is an integral component of project management; therefore the ability to manage people is an essential skill for project managers. Project success depends on the performance of others who are in key project role (e.g. project team members, project sponsors, customers and stakeholders.) Well developed people management skills are fundamentals to a high project management maturity level.
