Verbal Reasoning is the ability to analyze information and solve problems using language-based reasoning. Language-based reasoning may involve reading or listening to words, conversing, writing, or even thinking. From classroom learning to social communication to texting and email, our modern world is built around listening to or reading words for meaning and expressing knowledge through spoken language.
To help improve verbal reasoning skills, I encourage the children to read a wide variety of books. Those who do so improve both their vocabularies and background knowledge. I also suggests playing word games such as Boggle, Scrabble and Hangman and doing crosswords, word searches and anagrams. I suggests making a game out of challenges such as finding antonyms and synonyms, spotting the odd word in a list of related words and in using spelling strategies, such as teaching homonyms. These activities can be fun, but at the same time children learn skills they need to reason.
