Verbal reasoning is the ability to understand and reason using words is very important for your child. Being a speech-language pathologist, I always access a child's reasoning skills through both structured and non-structured tasks to enable me to know what and how to teach the child.

I do this by looking at their understanding of words and phrases, their ability to draw a conclusion from incomplete sentences, their ability to identify an incomplete statement, their ability to problem-solve or provide alternative ideas when needed.

For example, I might hold out a green crayon to the child and say "here is your purple crayon". Though this task may seem like I'm just being silly but the child's response will tell me a lot about this verbal reasoning level. Then I can know where to start from when teaching him/her.
I always give my best when teaching and always make sure I leave the child better than the way I met him/her.
