How I can help

Literacy & Numeracy

More than 3 years experience

I have excellent knowledge of child development which helps me with method and learning pattern to use for each child for them to understand literacy & numeracy. In my class I develop each child’s ability using a baseline assessment test. With the assessment test, it helps me organize my teaching skills to meet the need of each child.
I have taught kids in a class that had issues with number identification, they had crammed numbers but when the numbers are scattered and they are asked to identify numbers randomly they could not. Also they cannot count numbers backwards or skip count in 3’s or 6’s. I also had a few who did not know how to divide objects in fractions of quarters or thirds. Take for example one third of nine balls is three. I created the number chart and encouraged kids to read backwards taking ten numbers at a time. For instance 100, 99,98,………..till 91, then 90-81, this really worked. Also I got fancy buttons to teach fractions of halves, quarters and thirds. I have achieved great results teaching kids simple division and multiplication by adding using attractive class objects.
I used jolly learning concepts in teaching the various levels of jolly phonics. I also teach the alphabets A-Z using the sounds of the letters, then the kids are taught to blend and they are taught blend and digraphs. I once had a student who as at year 3 in his school could not read, the words he knew were words that he had crammed. I had to teach him sounds, blends and sight words it took about 7 months of constant tutoring but eventually he came around and was top three in his class by the end of the session.
I use visual style of teaching with my flash cards, engage children in block play that allows them to do mathematics in numerous ways, including sorting, buildings and making patterns, lastly, use of number rods for counting.
