First and foremost i usually ask and try to discern the mood of my student before embarking on teaching them. The secondary students i used to take are guys and sometimes they are not into questions like "how are you" "how was day" kind of questions.
So what i do is talk a little about what i know they are interested in, (which i usually find out from the first week) and then that keeps them more lively and interested and from there we delve into the topic and subject for the day. Also usually when teaching i try as much as possible to use happening (everyday life) examples that they can relate to, it is proven and tested from my experience, it makes them remember faster. I also never joke with end of the day class work and subsequent tests. This particularly helped one of my student get an A in his course recently.

Testing them for me always makes them prepared for the actual school tests and exams. We always do corrections immediately after to help them know why they failed that number and the correct answer. Tests are really important to me. My classes are also always very interactive because feedback helps me get the extent to which my students understand what i am passing across. I am Patient, Persistent Disciplined and Result Oriented, if I don't see it bringing result, I won't get into it. So I always have a goal of transforming my students before I even begin to teach them, that is my driving force and it keeps me focused and firm on the journey of teaching the students to become successful in that subject /those subjects.
