I have seen pupils reason from a peripheral perspective, and with time we have made them see reasons to think outside the box of what is presented to them at sight, so meaning to words are sought to see other possible meanings.
We use samples and get videos of some solved works, and then pupils are encouraged to try out on their own to ensure mastery.
