Algebra is introduced at an early stage in JSS. The essence is to tell a story using letters for unknown quantities in a problem. A story could be an equation, inequality or a probability.

An equation can be linear, quadratic or higher depending on the number of unknowns it has and how complex their relationship is. A question having an unknown needs only an equation. Two unknowns require two simultaneous equations, meaning hey must be satisfied at both times by all values acceptable.

The beauty of Algebra lies in simplifying complex relationships to reveal a solution method. I have taught Algebra at Primary, JSS and SSS levels. I always use practical examples to dispel conceptual difficulties.
