My engineering background gives me a very sound footing with regards to general mathematics. Still, my 10+ years of on-the-job working experience also adds more worth and value to my competence. My job is made easy if my student has a solid mathematical foundation. In this case, I will simply play the role of facilitator, guide and tutoring assistant. The child forms the centre piece of our time together.
However, if the child doesn't have a solid mathematical foundation, I will have to take the child down through the rudiments of the subject. I may even have to go as far as treating areas like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and word problems involving them.Other areas include fractions and decimals. I recall tutoring a boy who had problems with his assignment in percentages. After a brief assessment, I realized he simply had issues with fractions. Hence, I started working with him from fractions and tutored all the way to percentages.
