Literacy helps students apply reading, writing, speaking and listening skills across a variety of subject areas.” Numeracy is “the ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts, processes, and skills to solve problems and make decisions in a variety of situations, including real-life scenarios.”
Obtaining an acceptable level of literacy and numeracy can greatly improve many factors in the student's life, including improvements to their social life, education and career prospects, their ability to read, write, interprete and understand information.
Without basic literacy skills pupils will struggle to engage with subjects across the curriculum. Poor numeracy and literacy skills can have a huge knock-on effect on their wider education and the ability to get on in life.
Numeracy, like literacy, allows the child to be able to quantify and measure their environment in different ways which will help them to make wiser judgements about the kind of actions to take in their lives.
